Description and Background

The objective of this award is to recognize research excellence in the fields of theoretical and mathematical physics. In 1995, the Centre de recherches mathématiques (CRM) and the Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) created, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the CAP, a joint annual prize in recognition of exceptional achievements in the fields of theoretical and mathematical physics.

The award is not limited to CAP members, but the candidates’ research should have been done in Canada or in affiliation with a Canadian organization.

Evaluation Criteria

Nominees will be evaluated on their scientific and technical contributions in theoretical or mathematical physics that sets them apart from their peers. The basis for this evaluation will be the nominee’s contributions including but not limited to the following:

  • Evidence of significant scientific and technical accomplishments in research and development.
  • Letters from experts who are familiar with their work. These letters should outline the nominee’s accomplishments, technical contributions, and impact on theoretical or mathematical physics that sets this nominee apart from their peers.
  • The value and impact of all research outputs (including datasets and software) in addition to research publications; consideration will be given to a broad range of impact measures including qualitative indicators of research impact, such as influence on policy and practice.
  • Invited conference presentations and invited colloquia and seminars.
  • Honours, citations, certificates, awards, and other recognition for their research.
  • Contributions to the training of highly qualified personnel, taking into consideration in particular HQP accomplishments and outcomes.
  • Fostering diversity and inclusion through recognition of outstanding accomplishments is also an important aspect in selecting successful candidates. This should be taken into account by selection committees, e.g., when the levels of accomplishments of nominees are very close.
