Description and Background

This medal is intended to recognize and promote the creativity of scientists working in Canada in the area of industrial and applied physics, and to particularly recognize the successful application of physical principles to the creation of practical innovations, as demonstrated (for example) by benefit of the medal holder’s contributions to society.

The award is open to all physicists, whether in industry, research institutes, universities, government, or elsewhere. The mandate of this award should not discourage the nomination of applied physicists for other CAP Medals.

Evaluation Criteria

Nominees will be evaluated on their contributions to industrial and applied physics that set them apart from their peers. The basis for this evaluation will be the nominee’s contributions including, but not limited to, the following:

  • Quality of research and development
  • Impact of the candidate’s work on the development of their field or industry
  • Impact on society of the nominee’s contributions
  • Innovative solutions to practical problems
  • Commercialization and economic benefits
  • Contributions to training of highly qualified personnel, particularly HQP accomplishments and outcomes
