The CAP is deeply saddened to announce the passing of Dr. Raymond Laflamme

Dr. Laflamme was the founding director of the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) at the University of Waterloo, an Officer of the Order of Canada, and a recipient of the prestigious CAP-CRM Prize in Theoretical and Mathematical Physics.

He was internationally renowned for his pioneering work on quantum error correction—foundational research that helped pave the way for fault-tolerant quantum computing. Earlier in his career, Dr. Laflamme also made significant contributions to general relativity, particularly in the study of black strings and the arrow of time, deepening our understanding of fundamental questions in general relativity and cosmology.

Dr. Laflamme’s visionary leadership and scientific legacy have left an indelible mark on physics in Canada and around the world. He will be remembered not only for his brilliant mind, but also for his generosity, mentorship, and commitment to building a vibrant quantum science community.
