IYQ 2025 Opening Ceremony
The Opening Ceremony of IYQ 2025 is taking place at the UNESCO Headquarters in Paris, France, February 4-5, to celebrate the launch of IYQ 2025! There are over two dozen Canadians in Paris celebrating the IYQ launch either as speakers, panelists or delegates. Click here to watch the live stream from UNESCO.
We have a Winner! CAP-IYQ 2025 Design Competition
At the end of last year, the CAP IYQ Canada team invited all physics students in Canada to create a design for the Canada-wide celebration of the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology and compete for the prize of $1000. We had a great turnout with 37 amazing creations submitted!
We are pleased to announce Jasmine Zhang as the winner of the CAP IYQ Design. Jasmine is a first-year PhD student at the University of British Columbia working with the T2K/Hyper-K group at TRIUMF.
They are honoured to have their design chosen for the CAP IYQ 2025 competition. Their design represents a superposition of quantum-driven technological advancements and the fundamental physics underlying the natural world. The orientation of the two halves of the Canadian maple leaf is a nod to the familiar orthonormal basis for the spin-1⁄2 particle.
The IYQ Canada team is reviewing the other competition submissions to decide on several honourable mentions. Those additional designs will be used on specific Canadian IYQ merchandise like t-shirts, mugs, stickers, etc., or included in the special issue of Physics in Canada, or may be used in another form that will be celebrating IYQ2025.
Quantum Canada: Open Doors 2025
Mark your calendars for May 3, 2025!
As part of the United Nations’ International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, Canada is hosting Quantum Canada: Open Doors 2025, a coast-to-coast celebration of quantum science and technology.
This nationwide event invites academic institutions, companies, non-profits, and individuals to open their doors to the public, showcasing Canada’s leadership in quantum through free and engaging programming. From lab tours and interactive exhibits to public lectures and virtual events, there’s something for everyone to explore.
Want to get involved? Submit your event idea at quantumcanada2025.ca (select “Submit an Event” under Event tab) and join us in celebrating Canada’s quantum achievements!
Together, we can raise awareness, engage communities, and inspire the next generation of quantum innovators.
IYQ Special Theme Issue of Physics in Canada
Throughout the year, a variety of events will take place across Canada (and worldwide) to celebrate all aspects of quantum science.
One of these initiatives is the creation of a special issue of Physics in Canada celebrating the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology. The goal of this special issue is to create an overview of Canadian research in quantum science and technology, broadly construed, showcasing its diversity and impact.
We invite members of the Canadian quantum community to submit one-page proposals for contributions to this publication. Proposal details and submission instructions can be found on the CAP’s website.
