2018 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics awarded to WMAP collaboration

The 2018 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics has been awarded to the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) collaboration for “detailed maps of the early universe that greatly improved our knowledge of the evolution of the cosmos and the fluctuations that seeded the formation of galaxies”.

The five team leaders of the collaboration are: Gary Hinshaw of the University of British Columbia, Charles L. Bennett of Johns Hopkins University, Norman Jarosik of Princeton University, Lyman Page Jr. of Princeton University, and David N. Spergel, also of Princeton University.

The $3 million prize will be shared among the entire 27-member WMAP collaboration, which also includes Kendrick Smith of Perimeter Institute, Mark Halpern of the University of British Columbia, and Robert Hill of Waterloo University.

The CAP congratulates the WMAP collaboration on receiving this prestigious award.
