Aperçu du congrès 2021

The 2021 CAP Congress will be held completely online from June 6 – 10, 2021. The 5-day Congress will be an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the achievements of physicists in Canada and abroad. Submit an abstract to share your research.

The Herzberg Public Lecture will be given by the 2018 Canadian Nobel Laureate Dr. Donna Strickland (University of Waterloo) and is currently planned for Sunday June 6th, 2021 following our High School Teachers Workshop.

Our exciting program includes plenary talks by:

•  Avery Broderick (University of Waterloo/Perimeter),
• Alessandra Lanzara (Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory),
• Brian Wilson (University of Toronto),
• Renee Horton (NASA),
• Chanda Prescod-Weinstein (University of New Hampshire),
• A community update by the President of NSERC, Alejandro Adem,
• and a presentation of the first annual Canadian EDI Survey results by survey coordinators, Dr. Kevin Graham and Anastasia Smolina.

The Congress will also include several networking events, including a “lunch-time” Science Policy Workshop, an afternoon and an early evening poster session, and opportunities for students to participate in best student paper competitions, professional development, and training opportunities.

SYMPOSIA DAY, TUESDAY JUNE 8

• Low Pressure/Magnetic Confinement/Inertial Confinement/Basic Plasma Physics (DPP)

INNOVATIVE ONLINE PLATFORM / PROGRAMMING

SOFTWARE:

As the 2021 Congress will be virtual only, we have contracted with a software platform called Underline to manage the Congress virtual events (see https://underline.io).

This platform does not require any download of specific software, it is completely browser based.  The Underline platform contains a Networking/Social Activities sub-area, based on the platform GatherTown which we will be using for our poster session and other networking opportunities.

In addition to the live plenary talks and symposia listed above, the Congress program includes a series of 45-minute parallel sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  To ensure that the conference is accessible to our members from coast-to-coast, the conference will be scheduled between 10h30 EST and 17h30 EST.  This means that the amount of time available for our delegate presentations is much more limited than what has been offered during the in-person congress.

Thus, to take advantage of the innovations that being totally online affords while making every effort to maximize the number of presentations that can be offered, we are urging that much of the Congress be run in a flipped hybrid mode.  This means that presenters will pre-record videos of their presentations and then participate in an online session where they will give a live summary/update of their pre-recorded presentation and participate in a question and answer session dedicated to the talks ascribed to their session.

The summary/update presentations will be scheduled as 3 minutes for invited talks and 1.5 minutes for contributed talks. By adopting this model, presenters will benefit from being able to make their full 30 (invited) or 15 (contributed) talk available while still being able to update the pre-recorded material during their update presentation, Student oral presenters will also gain experience in preparing a full talk, preparing an “elevator” version, and participating in a group discussion about their field of research.

All pre-recorded talks will be made available to registered delegates approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of the Congress.  In addition, the Congress being managed within the Underline platform will be recorded and will be made available to registered delegates for a period of time following the Congress.

Poster presenters will enjoy the virtual networking platform that will allow delegates to browse the posters ahead of the formal sessions, post questions for the author at any time, attend the poster session and virtually meet the poster author (via a Zoom-like video interface) while looking at the pdf of the poster.  Delegates will also be able to request a meeting to discuss their material if they are not able to attend during the scheduled poster sessions.

BE AMONG THE PRESENTERS – SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT BY FEB. 28TH

Oral presentation abstracts must  be submitted by the deadline of February 28th, 2021 in order to be considered. As there is limited time available for oral presentations, poster submissions are encouraged. Post-deadline poster abstracts will be accepted for a limited period of time once the abstracts submitted on time have been processed. Please submit an abstract and urge others to do so, well before the February 28th deadline.

Students are reminded that there are competitions for both poster and oral presentations. CAP membership is required to participate, and division membership is required to be eligible for division prizes.  For more details on the competitions, including instructions on how to enter, visit the Congress webpage here.

REGISTRATION FEES

As the 2021 congress is being offered virtually, the costs associated with running the Congress are lower than are associated with in-person events; however, there are still costs involved that need to be recovered, including among other things, the costs of the Congress management software and the staff time associated with the Congress.   The fee structure that has been adopted for this year was set following a careful review of both of those factors.  Click here to see the registration fees —
