President’s Message

As we come to the end of the semester and segue from Winter to Spring, it’s been a challenging but rewarding year to date. There have been seismic shifts around us both nationally and internationally that have impacted (and probably will continue to impact) our community but hope springs eternal. I do hope you have had the opportunity to engage with the excellent lecture tour series at your institution or one close by. If you missed the talks, they will be posted on the CAP YouTube page CAPhys. In February I was extremely privileged to represent CAP at the official launch of the International Year of Quantum Science and technology (IYQ) at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris. The IYQ recognizes the significance of quantum advancements in shaping our future and celebrates 100 years since the birth of quantum mechanics. Please do take the opportunity to engage in the events planned for the year by our IYQ Canada Team. It’s an excellent opportunity to engage and inspire youth about physics and science. Lastly, I’m excited and looking forward to seeing you at our annual Congress to be held at the University of Saskatchewan, June 8-13. It promises to be an excellent Congress – book your flights and accommodations!

All the best,
Martin Williams

Physics in Canada

With Vol. 77(2) posted last November, Vol. 78(1) posted in February, and two more issues (Vol. 79(1) and Vol. 80(1)) nearly complete, we will soon have caught up with our backlog, and it is time to gather material for the 2025 issues and plan the future.

Two issues are in preparation for 2025. Vol. 81(1) will contain material related to the 2025 Congress and short reviews and educational articles submitted by our community. We welcome contributions that inform and educate us in a language understandable to a 4th year undergrad. For information on how to submit see the online instructions. To celebrate the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology (IYQ), Vol 81(2) will be a special issue focused on the exciting work happening in Quantum Physics related fields in Canada. The guest editors for this special theme issue are Julien Ross (Dalhousie), John Donohue (Perimeter), and Ben Newling (UNB). Input is welcome.

Going forward, we will publish two issues a year, a theme issue and a post congress issue. Articles and other content will be posted at https://pic-pac.cap.ca as they are finalized. Every six months they will be compiled into full issues. We welcome theme issue ideas for 2026 and beyond. Please send ideas to the Editor of Physics in Canada at pic-pac@cap.ca.

To grace the cover of our upcoming issues we have launched a call for Cover Art. You are invited to submit photographs of beautiful or unusual physics phenomena that may be selected to appear on the cover of Physics in Canada. Please send an electronic copy of the photograph, with a short (200 words or less) description explaining the phenomena in terms suitable for, and understandable to, any practising or student physicist, to the Editor of Physics in Canada at pic-pac@cap.ca. Please note that all entries must be original artwork produced by the participant.
