CAP Submits a brief to the Tri-Councils on the new federal Capstone funding agency

On June 17, the Minister of Innovation, Science, and Industry and the Minister of Health issued a statement tasking the tri-council presidents with preparing a briefing document addressing the “Modernizing the Federal Research Support System for Future Success”.  This briefing document, due by the end of July, is to inform the Federal Government’s Fall Economic Statement.

As part of the process, the tri-councils were instructed to engage the full breadth of the research community and, in this regard, were provided with specific engagement parameters included in Appendix A to their letter of direction.

The tri-council presidents subsequently sought feedback from their research communities on the new Capstone agency proposed in the 2024 Federal Budget (and the Bouchard report), inviting submissions addressing the engagement parameters by July 17th.

The CAP’s newly-elected Director of Science Policy and Advocacy, James Fraser, reached out to the CAP’s Science Policy and Advocacy Committee and cognate organizations to gather draft briefings to identify common areas of interest to highlight in a CAP submission.  The CAP’s submitted brief can be viewed here.  Special thanks are extended to all those who assisted in this process under such short notice.

The CAP’s Science Policy and Advocacy Committee will be monitoring the government’s Fall Economic Statement for the next update on this new organization.
