The 5-day Congress will be an opportunity to showcase and celebrate the achievements of physicists in Canada and abroad. Submit an abstract to share your research.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h3><\/h3>\n<h3><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">Herzberg Public Lecture<\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Herzberg Public Lecture will be given by the 2018 Canadian Nobel Laureate <b>Dr.\u00a0Donna Strickland (<\/b>University of Waterloo) and is currently planned for Sunday June 6th, 2021 following our High School Teachers Workshop.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Our exciting program includes plenary talks by:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"content-list\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\u00a0<b>Avery Broderick <\/b>(University of Waterloo\/Perimeter),<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Alessandra Lanzara <\/b>(Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory),<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Brian Wilson\u00a0<\/b>(University of Toronto),<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Renee Horton <\/b>(NASA),<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><b>Chanda Prescod-Weinstein <\/b>(University of New Hampshire),<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">A community update by the President of NSERC, <b>Alejandro Adem<\/b>,<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">and a presentation of the first annual Canadian <b>EDI Survey results<\/b> by survey coordinators, Dr. Kevin Graham and Anastasia Smolina.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The Congress will also include several networking events,\u00a0including a &#8220;lunch-time&#8221; Science Policy Workshop, an afternoon and an early evening poster session, and\u00a0opportunities for students to participate in best student paper\u00a0competitions, professional development, and training opportunities.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">SYMPOSIA DAY, TUESDAY JUNE 8<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">At this time, the following themed sessions are being planned :<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<ul class=\"content-list\">\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Neutrinos &amp; Beyond (PPD)<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Cosmology: A celebration of Dr. James Peebles&#8217; 2019 Nobel Prize (DTP), featuring an opening presentation by Dr. Peebles<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Quantum Machine Learning (DTP)<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Impactful Advances in Biological and Medical Physics (DPMB)<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Private Sector Physics (DAPI, professional affairs)<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Low Pressure\/Magnetic Confinement\/Inertial Confinement\/Basic Plasma Physics (DPP)<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Magnetic North Conference<\/li>\n<li class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Physics for the Next Generation of Sensors and Metrology (NRC)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">INNOVATIVE ONLINE PLATFORM \/ PROGRAMMING<\/span><\/h3>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>SOFTWARE:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">As the 2021 Congress will be virtual only, we have contracted with a software platform called Underline to manage the Congress virtual events (see <a href=\"https:\/\/underline.io\/\">https:\/\/underline.io<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">This platform <strong>does not<\/strong> require any download of specific software, it is completely browser based.\u00a0 The Underline platform contains a Networking\/Social Activities sub-area, based on the platform GatherTown which we will be using for our poster session and other networking opportunities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>TIME ZONES:\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">In addition to the live plenary talks and symposia listed above, the Congress program includes a series of 45-minute parallel sessions on Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday.\u00a0 To ensure that the conference is accessible to our members from coast-to-coast, the conference will be scheduled between <strong>10h30 EST and 17h30 EST<\/strong>.\u00a0 This means that the amount of time available for our delegate presentations is much more limited than what has been offered during the in-person congress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Thus, to take advantage of the innovations that being totally online affords while making every effort to maximize the number of presentations that can be offered, we are urging that much of the Congress be run in a <strong>flipped hybrid mode<\/strong>. \u00a0This means that presenters will pre-record videos of their presentations and then participate in an online session where they will give a live summary\/update of their pre-recorded presentation and participate in a question and answer session dedicated to the talks ascribed to their session.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">The summary\/update <strong>presentations<\/strong> will be scheduled as 3 minutes for invited talks and 1.5 minutes for contributed talks. By adopting this model, presenters will benefit from being able to make their full 30 (invited) or 15 (contributed) talk available while still being able to update the pre-recorded material during their update presentation, <strong>Student oral presenters<\/strong> will also gain experience in preparing a full talk, preparing an &#8220;elevator&#8221; version, and participating in a group discussion about their field of research.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">All pre-recorded talks will be made available to registered delegates approximately 2 weeks prior to the start of the Congress.\u00a0 In addition, the Congress being managed within the Underline platform will be recorded and will be made available to registered delegates for a period of time following the Congress.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Poster presenters<\/strong> will enjoy the virtual networking platform that will allow delegates to browse the posters ahead of the formal sessions, post questions for the author at any time, attend the poster session and virtually meet the poster author (via a Zoom-like video interface) while looking at the pdf of the poster.\u00a0 Delegates will also be able to request a meeting to discuss their material if they are not able to attend during the scheduled poster sessions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<h3 class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 14pt;\">BE AMONG THE PRESENTERS \u2013 SUBMIT AN ABSTRACT BY FEB. 28TH<\/span><\/h3>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Abstract submissions for contributed oral and poster presentations at the 2021 CAP Congress, are now being accepted at (link coming soon).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\"><strong>Oral presentation abstracts <\/strong>must\u00a0 be submitted by the deadline of February 28th, 2021 in order to be considered. As there is limited time available for oral presentations, poster submissions are encouraged. <strong>Post-deadline poster abstracts<\/strong> will be accepted for a limited period of time once the abstracts submitted on time have been processed. Please submit an abstract and urge others to do so, well before the February 28th deadline.<\/p>\n<p class=\"x_MsoNormal\">Students are reminded that there are competitions for both poster and oral\u00a0presentations.
